Disposable Electronic Cigarettes: The Facts

The majority of disposable electronic cigarettes contain upwards of 20mg nicotine (2%).

This is the highest amount that can be legally sold in line with the TPD.

A typical 600 puff device is roughly the equivalent of 48 to 50 cigarettes. Be safe, know the facts.

Unlike most traditional E-liquids, a typical disposable electronic cigarette's packaging will display its overall nicotine content in percentages rather than milligrams (mg) per millilitre. This, unfortunately, has led to a great deal of confusion amongst the public in regards to the actual strength of some of these devices.

Taking a typical 600 puff disposable for example; at 2%, the general nicotine content equates to 20mg per millilitre of E-liquid (2ml total). This is roughly equivalent to a total of around 48 to 50 cigarettes.

Whereas 2% really doesn’t look like all that much on paper, in reality this is the highest nicotine strength that can be legally sold in line with the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD).

Whilst the overwhelming majority of reputable vape retailers across the country responsibly source their products from UK-based wholesalers, and work hard to ensure that all stock is fully TPD compliant and MHRA approved, there is an increasing number of illegally imported, and potentially unsafe disposable devices in circulation. These are typically sold in corner shops (where there is a growing trend of these rebranding themselves as vape shops) and online, promising a much higher number of puffs (usually upwards of 1500 or more) and sometimes containing an incredibly high overall nicotine content (50mg/ml or 5%). Tank sizes are strictly limited by law to a total of 2ml, regardless of device.

Whilst this might sound attractive in terms of saving money, especially with the cost of living skyrocketing as it is, there’s no real telling as to whether these products are genuine or not, or what ingredients they actually contain.

Vaping has been proven time and again to be a much healthier alternative to smoking, improving the livelihood of millions per year. The horror stories that hit the press more often than not stem from such illegal products that have flooded the market. Sadly, there are still an irresponsible few who wish to tarnish the industry in the name of making a quick profit.

Be safe, know the facts.
